Why Koru Psychological Services?

At Koru Psychological Services, we seek to companion those in grief.  Grief over human losses, companion animal losses - but also other losses (loss of future goals, plans, dreams; adjusting to the losses associated with chronic medical issues, etc.)  We also work with very complicated, traumatic loss (in fact, this is one of our specialties.)

Loss encompasses a broad variety of related issues that we can work on together in therapy.

Koru Psychological Services found its name based in beautiful New Zealand Māori traditions.  In New Zealand, the unfurling silver fern frond represents life, growth, strength and peace.  When thinking of a name to use for this practice – none seemed as beautiful and symbolic as this.

Grief, at sometime or another, touches us all.  May the work we do together bring new life to your soul, growth to your spirit, and both strength and a gentle peace to your body no matter what losses you bring into therapy.  YOU deserve to be heard, honored and I look forward to hearing about your precious loved ones.

Why work with only bereaved individuals?
Over the past two decades, I have repeatedly heard stories where brokenhearted individuals sought out help, only to be hurt in the process.  These interactions have left people struggling to find assistance with life's multitude of loss,

I commit that I will not give you platitudes (e.g. "God needed another angel for his garden").  I commit that I will listen to details that you might be afraid to share with others.  I commit to offering you compassion, companionship and a safe place to figure out what your new normal is after the tremendous loss you have endured.  I  commit to not rushing you.

I truly hope to create that sacred space where you can do the work of your heart and soul.
